A major infrastructure project is currently taking shape in northwestern Iceland, near the Gufu and Djúpi fjords, where a new 250-meter road bridge is under construction. Once completed, the bridge will significantly improve connectivity in the region by replacing the existing winding and hilly coastal roads that currently follow the fjord shorelines. The new crossing will not only enhance traffic flow and safety but also shorten travel distances by 22 kilometers and reduce driving times by approximately 30 minutes.
We are proud that our Icelandic market partner, Rúko hf, is contributing to the successful progress of this ambitious project with high-performance Tsurumi pumps. Five KRS1022 units and one KTZ67.5 unit are being used to remove seawater from the construction excavation and discharge it back into the sea.
One of the biggest challenges on coastal construction sites is corrosion caused by saltwater. To ensure reliable long-term operation, the deployed KRS and KTZ pumps have been equipped with Tsurumi's specialized Seawater-Resistant Kit.
The kit combines two key protective measures:
Galvanic corrosion occurs when two or more metallic materials come into electrical contact in a highly conductive environment such as seawater. In such cases, the metal with the lower electrochemical potential corrodes first, while the metal with the higher potential remains protected.
Tsurumi utilizes this principle by attaching zinc sacrificial anodes to the pump housing. Since zinc has a lower electrochemical potential than the gray cast iron used in the pump casing, the zinc corrodes instead of the pump itself.
For optimum protection, the weight of the anodes must correspond to approximately 5% of the pump's dry weight. In the Iceland project, this means 4.95 kg of zinc anodes for the KTZ67.5 and 19.5 kg for each KRS1022.
To provide additional protection where sacrificial anodes alone may not be sufficient, Tsurumi has also developed a seawater-resistant impeller made from a special cast-iron alloy. Together, these technologies deliver outstanding durability and reliability in harsh marine environments.
The Iceland bridge project is another example of how Tsurumi pumping solutions help overcome demanding construction challenges while supporting the development of critical infrastructure around the world.
