The first step is selecting a pump that matches the application. The pump should be designed for the expected solids content, particle size and concentration of the liquid being handled. For particularly demanding wastewater applications containing high levels of fibrous materials, Tsurumi cutting and macerating pumps offer an effective solution by reducing solids to smaller particles before they enter the discharge pipe, significantly lowering the risk of clogging.
The discharge pipework plays an equally important role. Pipes that are too small can create flow restrictions, while oversized pipes may reduce flow velocity, allowing solids to settle and accumulate.
Maintaining sufficient flow velocity helps keep solids suspended throughout the system and minimises sediment build-up. In addition, suitable screening devices prevent large foreign objects from entering the pump, protecting both the pump and the entire installation from unnecessary damage.
Regular inspections are another key factor in ensuring reliable pump operation. Checking the suction plate, impeller and pump inlet for deposits allows potential problems to be identified and resolved before they develop into serious blockages. In most cases, preventive maintenance is considerably more cost-effective than unplanned repairs and downtime.
If a blockage does occur, the pump should first be disconnected from the power supply before any maintenance work begins. Accumulated solids should be removed from the suction plate and impeller, while the pump casing and surrounding components should be inspected for deposits or damage. The discharge pipe should also be checked for restrictions and, if necessary, flushed with clean water to remove trapped solids. After reassembly, the pump can be reconnected and tested to ensure normal operation has been restored.
