Even the extremely robust and durable Tsurumi pumps require regular servicing to ensure reliable operation over many years. Proper maintenance significantly reduces downtime, lowers operating costs and helps maintain consistently high performance.
Regular inspections, correct operating procedures and timely maintenance of key components such as impellers, mechanical seals and electrodes are essential to keeping your Tsurumi pump in optimum condition.
Recommended Inspection and Maintenance Intervals
Monthly insulation resistance check
The insulation resistance should be checked once a month and remain above 1 MΩ. This protects the motor and electrical components and ensures safe operation.
Six-monthly oil inspection
The oil should be inspected every six months for signs of contamination or decomposition. Contaminated oil can impair lubrication and damage the mechanical seal.
Performance monitoring
Pump performance should be monitored continuously. If output drops by more than 15% compared to normal operation, the pump should be inspected immediately.
Key Components Requiring Regular Attention
Mechanical seals
Mechanical seals should generally be replaced every two years. If oil contamination is detected, replacement should be carried out earlier. Seals, O-rings, V-rings and shaft protection sleeves should also be inspected regularly and replaced when wear is identified.
Impeller
The impeller should be checked and cleaned regularly. Operating the pump within the correct pump curve helps minimise wear and maintain efficiency.
Electrodes
Electrodes must be cleaned regularly and checked for correct function to ensure reliable start and stop control.
Oil maintenance
Oil should be changed every 12 to 24 months. Milky oil is usually an indication that the mechanical seal needs replacement.
Special Requirements for FSP and BER Models
For FSP foam separators, the oil should be checked every 1,500 operating hours or every six months and replaced every 3,000 operating hours or every 12 months. Mechanical seals in the FSP series should be replaced annually.
For BER models, the ejector and air intake system should be inspected monthly to ensure they remain clean and fully functional.
Overhaul Intervals
Even if a pump appears to be operating normally, a complete overhaul is recommended every three to five years to ensure long-term reliability.

When water rises unexpectedly, there is no room for delays. In civil engineering, tunnel construction, drainage projects or flood situations, reliable pump technology must be available immediately. Downtime can lead to costly damage, safety risks and project delays.
While many manufacturers rely on order-based production and therefore struggle with long delivery times, Tsurumi takes a different approach. Almost all of the company's more than 500 pump models are available directly from stock, giving customers a decisive time advantage in critical situations.
Stock Instead of Waiting Time
"We have made a virtue out of necessity," explains Daniel Weippert, Managing Director of Tsurumi Europe GmbH.
"As delivery times from our central factory in Japan are long, we must ensure sufficient availability in Europe."
To achieve this, Tsurumi maintains a six-month supply for the European market in its central warehouse in Antwerp. In addition, a three-month stock for Germany, Austria and Switzerland is held in Düsseldorf. Spare parts are also kept comprehensively in stock – not based on sales frequency, but according to practical necessity. This ensures that the full product range can be supported at all times.
A Decisive Advantage in Time-Critical Applications
Immediate availability is particularly crucial in construction drainage, special civil engineering, emergency situations and accident response.
"When an excavation pit fills up or heavy rainfall is forecast, there is simply no time to wait weeks for equipment," says Weippert. "In such cases, we deliver within hours via express direct shipment."
This logistics strategy enables Tsurumi to respond quickly and reliably whenever powerful pump solutions are urgently required – whether for planned projects or unforeseen emergencies.

In certain applications, customers deliberately choose to install their Tsurumi pump dry next to a sewage or wastewater tank. This setup offers clear advantages: maintenance work becomes faster, safer and more convenient. However, one crucial factor must be considered in dry installations – reliable motor cooling.
Submersible pump motors are normally cooled by the surrounding liquid. When a pump is installed permanently outside the tank, this natural cooling effect no longer applies. Without an appropriate cooling concept, overheating and premature wear would be unavoidable.
This is where Tsurumi's intelligent pump design comes into play.
Built-in cooling – even when installed dry
Tsurumi pumps designed for dry installation feature a proven cooling system:
A cooling jacket guides the pumped liquid around the motor to dissipate heat effectively
A bypass system ensures a constant flow into the cooling jacket
The motor remains reliably protected against overheating, even when the pump is not submerged
Why this matters for your operation
Reduced maintenance effort: Dry installations improve accessibility and shorten service times
Longer service life: Stable cooling protects the motor from thermal stress
Higher operational reliability: Correct cooling prevents unplanned downtime and costly repairs
To learn more about how cooling works in dry-installed Tsurumi pumps, watch our dedicated training video on YouTube.

The Grand Paris Express is fundamentally reshaping transport infrastructure across the Île-de-France region. On several of the lines currently under construction, Tsurumi France is playing an important supporting role — including on Metro Line 18, where tunnelling work is steadily advancing.
As the tunnel extends further away from the water treatment point, the challenge of transporting accumulating water increases significantly. Longer distances mean higher pressure losses in the drainage pipes — eventually exceeding the capacity of the pumps initially installed. To maintain continuous water flow to the treatment plant, the construction consortium needed an effective way to overcome these increasing hydraulic demands.
A Booster Solution for Long-Distance Pumping
The site management opted for a booster pump configuration, installing Tsurumi submersible pumps in series and outside the water — a non-standard setup that nevertheless works efficiently thanks to the robust design of Tsurumi pumps.
A key advantage: Tsurumi's original oil-lifter technology, which ensures consistent lubrication and cooling of the mechanical seal, even in demanding or unconventional operating conditions. This eliminates the risk of overheating and ensures reliable long-term performance.
KTZ 422: Power, Pressure and Reliability
To meet the pressure and distance requirements on Line 18, the consortium selected the Tsurumi KTZ 422. This 22 kW powerhouse is one of Tsurumi's most trusted models and is known for:
excellent versatility across applications
the ability to generate high discharge pressure
outstanding durability in abrasive and demanding environments
stable performance even in booster configurations

While much of the Lyon–Turin tunnel is being excavated using tunnel boring machines, several sections rely on traditional blasting techniques. Here, workers drill deep holes into the rock, fill them with dynamite, and detonate them to advance the tunnel. The loading drill shown in our photo breaks through the rock face, allowing the explosives to be placed precisely.
Each blast, however, brings new challenges: fresh water inflows emerge from the surrounding rock, carrying dust, metal particles, and coarse debris. This mixture must be pumped out continuously to keep the site safe and operational. The conditions are some of the toughest imaginable for any pump:
24/7 continuous duty
Occasional dry running
Highly abrasive water containing rock and cement particles
Strong vibrations and occasional heavy impacts
In this demanding environment, Tsurumi pumps show exactly why they are trusted worldwide in tunnel construction. They are:
Exceptionally durable and high-performing
Extremely robust and wear-resistant
Simple to service and maintain
Whether you need compact units or high-capacity powerhouses, Tsurumi offers a full range of pumps engineered for the toughest underground conditions.

Water quality has a direct impact on the performance, durability, and maintenance requirements of pump systems. Poor water conditions or specific characteristics can cause failures, increase repair costs, and significantly reduce the service life of a pump. Understanding the type of water in use is therefore essential for ensuring long-term efficiency.
Common Water Types and Their Effects on Pumps
Saltwater
Saltwater environments place extreme demands on pump materials. High salt concentrations can quickly cause corrosion and damage if equipment is not properly maintained. Submersible pumps in coastal or marine environments require robust construction and corrosion-resistant materials.
Freshwater
While freshwater is generally less aggressive, it still presents challenges. Neutral pH levels slow corrosion, but long-term exposure can still affect metal components. Additionally, mineral deposits and residues can clog inlets and reduce flow efficiency.
Contaminated Water
Contaminated or polluted water often contains sediments, oils, chemicals, and solids. These impurities accelerate wear, impair hydraulic performance, and may damage critical internal components.
Acidic Water
Acidic liquids, even in low concentrations, can attack metal surfaces and seals. Incorrect material selection may lead to leaks, corrosion, and unexpected downtime.
Why Tsurumi Pumps Are the Right Choice for Any Water Type
Selecting a pump that matches the water quality is essential for efficiency, reliability, and long service life. Tsurumi pumps are specifically engineered to handle a wide range of challenging environments—saltwater, freshwater, contaminated water, or acidic conditions.

In the Gorges du Verdon, one of France's most famous gorges, an ambitious construction project is currently underway: a 250-metre bypass is being built to secure a tunnel. Before excavation could even begin, a major challenge had to be overcome — the diversion of an impressive 180,000 cubic metres of water.
The team from Tsurumi France took on this demanding task with precision and determination. Over the course of a week, the team prepared the site by lowering three series of Tsurumi pumps 22 metres below ground level, installing pipes for horizontal water drainage (with a 21-metre height difference), setting up settling basins, and completing all electrical connections.
On Tuesday, 3 September, at 8:30 a.m., the pumps were started:
One GSZ, two KRD and three LH models, each designed for extreme operating conditions, worked continuously and reliably until Thursday, 5 September, at 1:30 a.m. By that time, 90,000 cubic metres of water had already been successfully pumped out — the remainder drained away naturally by gravity.
This impressive operation once again demonstrates the reliability, strength and endurance of Tsurumi pumps – even under the toughest environmental conditions.

This coming Friday, September 26, at 11 a.m. (CEST), take about 30 minutes to join us for a new #Tsurumi online training session! Our technical experts will discuss the importance of pipe type and inner diameter in the design of submersible pumps.
Why is this so important for you? Because the choice of pipe type and internal diameter determines the efficiency and service life of submersible pumps. This is because they influence the hydraulic resistance and flow conditions.
Empirical data from practical experience shows that pipes with too small a diameter or made of unsuitable materials lead to increased pressure loss and, in extreme cases, to cavitation. The pump becomes overloaded, and its service life is shortened.
For example, a pipe that was too small (DN50 instead of DN80) in a sewage system doubled energy consumption and caused frequent failures due to overheating. Conversely, a correctly dimensioned pipe in a similar application reduced maintenance costs by 30% and extended the service life of the pump by two years.
In the live training session, we explain how to find the right pipes for your Tsurumi pump and the respective application. This is an important topic that you should not miss. We appreciate your interest! Use this link to join the free livestream on September 26:

We are in the midst of man-made climate change. Summers are getting hotter worldwide, with long dry spells alternating with increasingly extreme rainfall events. In this world, it is important to take measures to slow down climate change. On the other hand, we must also adapt to the new reality. How do we deal with sudden heavy rainfall? When basements flood and sewers become overloaded?
Fire brigades, the construction industry and an increasing number of private users have been placing their trust in our #Tsurumi LSC flat suction pumps for many years. These are very compact, lightweight pumps that can be quickly transported to the site of operation with one hand – and start working immediately. Extremely easy to operate, the LSC pumps water down to a residual height of one millimetre. And anyone who has ever had to pump water out of a basement knows how long it takes to reach such a minimal water level.
In a short video, we show you how to start up the LSC and (rarely) maintain it: https://youtu.be/EpUYu4_vKjc?si=8meyKGAX1wXlwhl_

Time is of the essence on the construction site of the future underground railway in #Toulouse, France. There is no time to chase numbers - especially when it comes to the quantities of #water to be pumped, the performance or the traceability required by the authorities. #Tsurumi Connect helps with all these issues:
Our digital system collects real-time data from the connected pumps, checks the direction of rotation and phase, monitors operating costs, enables preventive maintenance of the pumps and issues push notifications in the event of problems so that a quick response can be made.
Our colleagues from Tsurumi France installed the system on the large construction site and coupled it with a flow meter. The result: a reduced operational load, better responsiveness and more transparency for the teams on site and the site managers.

Our stand has been dismantled, our contractor and #wastewater pumps are on their way back to our warehouse at the #Tsurumi European headquarters in Düsseldorf. What remains are the memories of a very good week at #BAUMA and numerous interesting conversations with our trade fair guests!
Our Tsurumi team, supported by many of our European market partners, spent seven intensive days experiencing how important high-performance, durable and reliable pumps are to many companies in the construction industry. We were able to explain the quality and advantages of Tsurumi pumps in many discussions. We also learnt time and again from customers how well they can work with our solutions. This also includes our digital analysis, monitoring and control system Tsurumi Connect.
We are already looking forward to the next #bauma and the many other trade fairs where you can experience Tsurumi live in the meantime. But for now, we would like to thank you for your visit - see you next time!

Are you already looking forward to #BAUMA in Munich? This world trade fair for the construction industry only takes place every 3 years. As of today, the time has come again, and of course #Tsurumi is there.
We will be showing a large selection of contractor, #wastewater and sewage pumps at our stand A6.338 - and more: using the example of a smart booster installation with pumps connected in series, we will show you how you can digitally network analogue pumps: with Tsurumi Connect. This allows you to control, monitor and analyse your pumps or other connected machines. Furthermore you can experience for example the #Tsurumi CZ - our most powerful #sewage pump - at our booth. It has a special cutting configuration to prevent hard and fibrous solids from causing blockages. We will also be exhibiting TRN submersible aerators and MMS agitators for the wastewater sector at #BAUMA - and of course our compact wonders, the LSC flat puddle suckers. These remove #water down to a residual moisture content of one millimetre. In addition, despite their power, the LSC units are real lightweights so that they can be carried quickly to any job site.
Our place of operation from 7 to 13 April is #BAUMA2025 - hopefully yours too: We will welcome you to stand A6.338 with a Japanese ambience including a cosy bar and our tatami lounge. We look forward to your visit!

A technological highlight in over 100 years of #Tsurumi history is the development of the oil lifter in 1998, which is partly responsible for the legendary reliability and reliability of our units. Our engineers in Japan invented this component, which is positioned around the mechanical seal and ensures optimum lubrication of the upper seal faces. This works even if the lubricant is reduced to up to 1/3 of the nominal volume.
Pumps without oil lifters displace the lubricating oil to the outside. This quickly leads to bearing damage. In all Tsurumi pumps, the oil lifter ensures that the mechanical seals are permanently lubricated. This extends the service life of the mechanical seal. In addition, the combination of double inner mechanical seal and oil lifter prevents seal damage during dry running. Since then, even when a Tsurumi is aligned horizontally, the seal faces remain lubricated, which contributes to the longevity of the pump and ensures maximum performance when working in any position.
This video shows what makes the Tsurumi oil lifter so unique:

Pumping #wastewater that contains contaminants with fibrous substances? Where conventional pumps fail, the #Tsurumi CZ series is in its element: The submersible pumps have a cutting and shredding function in a unique design: A heart-shaped suction opening with a sharp-edged fixed cutting blade combined with a semi-open channel impeller, which is also equipped with two sharp-edged blades, results in a scissor-like shredding mechanism.
This innovation enhances the CZ pump's ability to deal with larger debris. Clogging of the pump is thus prevented by a mix of shredding and crushing.
Attention! These models are now available from stock in Europe:
100CZ45.5 (5.5 kW), 100CZ47.5 (7.5 kW), 100CZ411 (11 kW) and 100CZ415 (15 kW)

The process water of a plastic recycling plant naturally has a high proportion of plastics. This water must be collected and pumped by suitable pumps. Conventional shredding pumps repeatedly failed to perform this task. The solution for the customer was to switch to the hashtag#Tsurumi C series - one of the most reliable series in the market.
The 80C21.5 were able to pump the medium without any problems. A total of eight cutter pumps were installed in different basins to gradually remove the solids from the water so that it can be fed back into the recycling process.
All pumps are controlled by level sensors that keep the water in all containers at the same level, regardless of changes in the water inflow. By keeping the water level low, the pumps can collect more of the light solids that tend to accumulate on the water surface.
We have linked the specifications of the C series for you in the comment below this post.

We are very much looking forward to IFAT 2024, which starts on Monday, May 13 in Munich! The "World's Leading Trade Fair for Water, Sewage, Waste and Raw Materials Management" will run until May 17, and we will of course be there again with many exciting products!
At our stand 444 in hall B1, the focus will be on our innovation Tsurumi CZ, which is now also available in Europe: a submersible motor pump with cutting and shredding function, specially designed for pumping wastewater containing solids.
We will also show these versatile solutions:
- MMR submersible mixer: a 4kW unit with gearbox for a powerful mixing effect with a propeller thrust of 1165N
- Pump station "TSURUBOX", for example for domestic waste water that is collected and pumped into the sewer. The pumping station is equipped with a Tsurumi Cutter pump for blockage-free operation.
- Tsurumi Connect: We show you how you can control the pump digitally - for example, to clear a blockage that has occurred.
- LSC1.4S: We will be demonstrating on the stand how this residual water pump extracts water down to a water level of just 1 mm.
- 32TRN21.5 Submersible aerator
- POMA vortex pump with fiber-reinforced plastic housing and float
- 50UT2.75S Vortex sewage pump with wide passage
- 50SQ2-2.75 made of stainless steel
- 50GY21.1S macerator pump with high delivery head up to more than 60 m.
Of course, we are also dedicating our appearance to the 100th anniversary of Tsurumi. How? Let us surprise you and come and visit us at the Messe München!
